SMS PTA Volunteer Form 2021-22
We are currently looking for volunteers for the 2021-22 school year. PTA committees provide valuable opportunities for you to become involved in issues and activities that directly affect your child(ren) at Scarsdale Middle School and to collaborate with fellow SMS parents and/or SMS faculty. We have a place for everyone, with day or evening availability and different time commitments. We encourage sixth grade parents to jump right in! I would like to volunteer for the following SMS PTA Committee(s) – Check as many boxes as applicable.
6th Grade Fall Rec Night – Plan activities and coordinate chaperones for Friday evening on-site social known as "Rec. Night" for 6th Graders (in conjunction with the Village Recreation Department as well as any other grade-specific initiatives that may require PTA volunteers).
6th Grade Spring Rec Night – Plan activities and coordinate chaperones for Friday evening Bowling Party.
7th Grade Event – Plan activities and coordinate chaperones for afternoon or evening movie event known as "Rec Night" for 7th graders as well as any other grade-specific initiatives that may require PTA volunteers.
8th Grade Breakfast /Community Service Fair – Plan and coordinate morning on-site breakfast for 8th graders as part of end of year transition to SHS when Deans visit with students in May, assist with afternoon community service/club fair in coordination with high school to introduce 8th graders to extracurricular opportunities and organizations at SHS.
8th Grade End-of-Year Event/Party – Plan and coordinate an end-of-year event for 8th graders in June.
BOE Budget Study – Attend/watch videos of Board of Education budget meetings and budget study sessions in winter to help inform the SMS community of school budget issues.
Book Fair – Coordinate fall and spring book sales (2-3 days each).
Clothing/Spirit Wear – Select, order and distribute school clothing and spirit wear for limited sales periods in fall and spring.
Community Service – Suggest and assist with community service activities and events during the year such as the post-Halloween candy drive, the canned food drive, and used school supplies collection.
Compact – Attend quarterly committee meetings at the building level.  Compact is the New York State mandated process of shared decision-making between parents and school. Topics vary annually.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion – This committee is tasked with developing initiatives aligned with our commitment to creating a school and community that prioritizes diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
Environmental/Sustainability – Support and bring awareness to environmental and sustainability initiatives and efforts in the District and, specifically, at SMS, such as the SMS garden, recycling, and the walking school bus.
House Parents – Help to welcome parents and build community between parents and the school throughout the year. Role may include disseminating current information on events/initiatives related to House/Grade or organizing parent events.
Legislative – Study and disseminate information concerning federal, state, and local legislation impacting schools and educational policy (under guidance of PT Council).
Library Services – Assist school librarian with author visits, book shelving, and library activities.
Makerspace/STEAM – Support District-wide and SMS-specific innovation efforts as needed, help publicize SMS makerspace initiatives and liaise with counterparts in other PTAs within the District, and assist with PTC STEAM Day.
Multicultural – Plan and coordinate events to unite and celebrate SMS's diverse cultures and traditions, such as the Welcome Coffee (for parents and Youth Outreach Workers), Potluck Lunch (for parents and Principal, Assistant Principals, and House Counselors), Thanksgiving Lunch in conjunction with SHS PTA (for parents and District administrators) and spring International Lunch (for students only); welcome and facilitate introduction of new families from abroad to SMS and to the Scarsdale community.
Nutrition/Cafeteria Lunch Liaison – Liaison with various District administrators and SMS regarding healthy nutritional options and quality food service in the SMS house cafeterias.
Publicity – Arrange local press coverage and/or report and photograph newsworthy school and PTA events.
Virtual School Store – Manage a virtual school store under the supervision and direction of the SMS faculty member in charge of the enterprise.
SO (Pizza) Lunch Sales – Assist the SMS student government (SO) representatives with lunchtime sales and distribution on designated "pizza days" and other SO lunch sales.
Speech Contest – Arrange dinner for volunteer judges of the annual 7th and 8th Grade speech (public speaking) contest in March.
Staff Appreciation Luncheon/Events – Plan and organize a spring thank-you luncheon and/or events for SMS administrators, teachers, and staff (parents and students do not attend)
Wellness Committee – Promote the health and wellness of our students, faculty and community through various education and initiatives.
Liaisons to PTC, District, and Community Organizations
These liaison positions serve as main contacts for community groups, teachers, and PT Council committee chairs and assist with publicizing events, coordinating volunteers, and assisting as PTA representative, as needed
PTC Delegate – voting representative to the Scarsdale Parent-Teacher Council.
